History of HRB
It was way back in 1975 that Hospital Radio Bedford was formed. It all started with various fundraising events including discos (remember those?), sponsored events and donations from local companies until enough money had been raised to buy all the necessary equipment and to cover running costs. Eventually, on 28th June 1975, Hospital Radio Bedford was born in the Bedford South Wing Hospital building in a 4m x 3m room – although it measured 12 feet by 10 feet in those days!
The station was opened by Gilbert Hitchcock from the local health authority and Angela Piper from The Archers.
Listeners in both North and South Wings of Bedford Hospital could hear the programmes between 8.00pm and 9.30pm each evening taking over the channel that normally broadcast Radio 4, which in
itself caused some upset!
Comprising of around 150 volunteers and given a three-month probationary period by the hospital authorities, the station set out to prove that it could fulfil its remit of providing patients with wider coverage of local events and a chance to request their own choice of music. Thankfully they managed this and were allowed to continue. The station went from strength to strength but running a radio station is an expensive business so the fundraising continued.
On one weekend in September 1976, Hospital Radio Bedford held a Flag Day in Bedford town centre which included a six hour live broadcast from the window of Debenhams.
And as if that wasn’t enough, the following day 48 people took part in a 20-mile sponsored walk along the banks of the river. However, the hot weather took its toll and only about nine walkers managed the full distance but the events were a great success and £300 was raised. The station moved into a 13m x 3m air-conditioned Portakabin in the grounds of South Wing that provided space for a main studio, a production studio, an interview studio, announcer’s booth, reception and a record library – quite an improvement. So on 11th January 1982 the station was re-born into the new studio complex where it was to remain for 13 years. In December 1993 and 1994,
a number of members got involved in a temporary charity radio station called ‘Chill FM’ which grew out of the Radio Cracker! project. This inspired them to do a similar fundraising event for Hospital Radio Bedford. So it was in May 1996 that ‘Splash FM’ began its one month of broadcasting to the Bedford area. It all started in Church Square, Bedford with an outside broadcast, continued with a stage at the River Festival on 25th May before coming to an end at the Oasis Pool with a further outside broadcast. By 1995 the hospital needed the ground that the station stood on to build the new maternity and children’s wing so Hospital Radio Bedford was on the move again. This time the hospital kindly provided a basement room, still in South Wing, which gave us the space for three studios, a reception area and record library area.

On 29th September 1995 the new studios were opened by Brian Woodrow, High Sheriff of Bedfordshire. The main mixing desk from the old studio was moved across to the new complex and we were
lucky enough to get another desk from Chiltern Radio who were upgrading their equipment at that time – providing us with a second studio that was in stereo! At that time, all patients listened to us via ‘plastic tubes’ but the investment put into installing a stereo desk paid off when the new Hospicom system was introduced – providing our listeners with vastly improved quality. Another series of fundraising events provided a radio service for the Professional Flying Association’s Air Rally at Cranfield for four years from 1997. Visitors to these three-day events were provided with a mix of music, rally information, travel news and interviews with participants. Building the studio complex from scratch was a time-consuming process but the reward for all the hard work each year was a fun weekend for everyone and a donation to
enable the station to continue to provide a service to patients. In recent years the old mixing desk that served us well for 30
years had began to show its age and it was decided that it was time to replace it with a newer stereo desk. We managed to obtain an ex-demo desk from Sonifex at a knockdown price so, in October 2009, the process of rebuilding one of our studios started all over again! As time moved on all programmes continued to be broadcast, and with the withdrawal of Hospicom system from the wards HRB then continued broadcasting via the internet as it does now. When the Coronavirus struck we had to cease broadcasting from the hospital and members started broadcasting from their homes. During 2023 when the virus was mainly contained live broadcasting
restarted from the hospital studios.

In February 2024 Studio 2 was upgraded with identical equipment to Studio 1 and was designed to be the same layout for operating, and photos of Studio 2 are shown here.
At the end of COVID-19, we talked about the change of our studio 2 and upgraded it to a newer and more modern system. However, it was decided that the timing of the upgrade was not in the best interest of the station. This was revised in Jan 2024, so the plan to do the upgrade was scheduled and started in the early part of Feb 2024.
So, the old equipment was removed by Chris Jones and Dave Hill and the remainder of the equipment was removed and the studio was stripped of all items. Just as a note this equipment came from what was in the day Chiltern Radio and was identified as being nearly 50 years old. We decided to do this in 7 phases.
Over the next 6 weeks, the site was stripped and a start on reinstalling the equipment. However, we had a little problem, it was, that the old table surface was cut for the old equipment and won’t fit the new equipment,

so we asked around for some help. One of our presenters Tom McGrath suggested his son get involved so a couple of days later they arrived at the studio. After a short discussion, it was suggested that the company that Tom’s son worked at Travis Perkins could help, and one week later a new 3m x1m worktop arrived from Travis Perkins as a gift to HRB as a donation.
At that point, we got to work on fitting
the new top and then arrange the equipment layout to cut them to enable us to fit the equipment into the worktop. Once completed we fitted the equipment to the new desk. We are now on phase 6 of 7 and
I requested Dave Hill to return to start the cabling of the new equipment, after 3 weeks of cabling and termination plus soldering new connections to the ends of the cables, we are ready to start
connecting the new cabling to the
fitted equipment. Over two Working days, we finally had the new studio up and working and have started the testing phase.
We are now using the new studio and have now got two stereo / digital studios for our presenter to broadcast live and can swap from one studio to the other and also tether the two studios together to use both studios at the same time. Also, the new studio can be used for training new presenters and backup programs.
